Today was the warmest day since last November with a temperature of 13 degrees and some brave people were wearing sleeveless t-shirts! It was such a relief to see the sun after seemingly endless days of mist, rain, cold and dark days which need the lights on even at midday. A third copy of my poppies picture has sold, so I had to go to Romsey to deliver another and we took the opportunity to go for a walk around Romsey.Romsey Abbey is a 12th century church with tall arches and lots of windows which fill the nave with light on a sunny day. I have often wondered why these two very different doors are side by side!
The memorial is to Alice Taylor who died in 1834 of scarlet fever at the age of two years and five months. When she fell ill her father, the local doctor, brought her rose from the garden and she was still clutching it when she died. She had only been ill four days.
This carving is on an outside wall of the Abbey and is of Jesus on the Cross with the interesting addition of the Hand of God appearing from clouds above him to acknowledge his son, one of the earliest Christian symbols. The carving dates to 1000-1025.
Not far from the Abbey is a well manicured public park complete with bandstand which is a picture in spring when all the crocuses come into bloom. Who could resist photographing them!

What joyful images of flowers, and how good to hear of the warmth returning for you. I love the photo of the two doors and in my imagination could easily write a whole story about them! The little child clutching the rose is so touching.
ReplyDeleteI keep coming back to those images of the purple flowers - they are so refreshing to look at!
ReplyDeleteI will use them on my 2012 calendar!
