Blowing Away the Cobwebs

Walking along the prom at Southsea certainly blew the cobwebs away.  I love being by the sea, listening to the waves curling in against the sea defences and watching a few brave yachts zipping towards the Isle of Wight.  The horizon is huge with big skies, ominous black clouds and fluffy white ones with patches of azure showing through here and there. The sun illuminates separate parts of the landscape, then goes again.  Light is so fickle.  At one moment an object can look ethereal with a warm golden glow upon it, then the clouds come, and you wonder how you saw anything worthy of photographing there at all.

The same bandstand - different light.

A few reminders of Victorian street furniture still survive and are so elegant compared to the modern buildings that crop up along the front.

At one end of Southsea promenade is Clarence Pier with its tacky funfair (not open in the winter), penny arcades and stalls selling burgers, candy floss and fish 'n chips. I love the brilliant colours.

Walking through the entertainment area, you come to the battlements of Old Portsmouth and ultimately you can go to Gunwharf Quays with its Spinnaker Tower, a beacon at the mouth to Portsmouth and Gosport Harbours.

  1. There are some stunning colours in these shots. I particularly like the photo of the bright yellow shelter.... but who is the mysterious Victorian gentleman in that rather dashing hat?
