Today I came home by bus and walked past a magnificent Scots Pine tree at the end of the road which surprises me on many counts. The first is that it still remains standing, as it is massive with a very straight bark that is listing to one side and it is in the middle of a big housing estate. Secondly, because it has strange markings on its trunk. I discovered this when I was doing my Picture-a-Day project and I photographed what I thought was markings in the bark caused by nails being rammed in which had gone rusty. What I had forgotten was that this couldn't possibly be the case because the marking, like a double cross, is only about 1.5 inches tall. I wonder what the arrows mean?

How fascinating. You could always write a story unravelling this mystery! The markings in the first photo look really ancient.
